When you see it like that, you can tell it’s the voice of a bully. But when it’s in your head – it’s not so easy to ignore or make it go away, is it?
I get the frustration. I’ve been there. From asking for a raise to starting a business to having a loving, caring relationship, my personal regiment of inner critics has given me plenty of “you can’t do that – you can’t have that – what you want doesn’t matter” messages. There was this voice in my head that told me what I could and couldn’t do, who I should and shouldn’t be, right down to the correct way to fold my underwear.
But those voices kept me from being as successful in my career as I knew I could have been. And as a business owner, they were keeping me from serving the people who need my help.
The inner critic impacts everyone around us – friends, family, co-workers, everyone.
It keeps us from doing the things that matter to us and to the welfare of our families, our communities, and our world.
It keeps us from enjoying our lives.
There’s a ton of messages out there about how to change and create new habits.
There’s a lot of you gotta just do it talk about “adulting,” being strong, having willpower, going for what you want, and being determined.
And there’s a lot of you gotta just believe it talk about manifestation, the Law of Attraction, self-empowerment, and self-love.
There’s some truth in all of it, but you need ALL of it. Just-do-it doesn’t work without belief, and just-believe-it doesn’t work without action.
Plus, there’s an essential piece of information that’s left out: the actual neuroscience behind why change is difficult and how we make choices and decisions.
For now, let’s just say the brain is not naturally wired to embrace change, even as desireable a change as turning down the volume on the inner critic!
