We often feel like change is inflicted upon us.
To some extent, that’s true. We certainly didn’t choose the pandemic – but we all chose how we responded to it, how we led ourselves and others through it.
We don’t choose the weather – but we choose how we adapt to it, changing plans as needed.
We don’t choose to get laid off – but we choose how we move forward.
And yes, of course there are limitations, aspects of privilege, family resources, and so on. Of course there are, and I am not minimizing that at all.
There are still choices we can make.
And plenty of change really is change by choice. Personal, professional, organizational: we choose how we want to be in our families and communities, we choose how we show up at work, and companies choose strategic direction and the changes – the choices – that come with that.
And we choose the leaders who then lead us through change – whether that’s self-leadership, community leadership, corporate leadership, and so on.
We all have at least some agency. Some of us have more than others, but we all have at least some.
Choose wisely.
