You know what?
I’m tired of all the reports about the magnitude of change, the rate of change, the unreadiness for change, all of it.
We know change is happening faster and faster. We don’t need another survey or C-suite research report to tell us this, or to tell us that leaders are worried about it.
One of my core principles is:
~ find a better perspective ~ do something about it ~ make it fun ~
All that data doesn’t help with solutions.
Let’s start with reality.
Change isn’t going to slow down or stop; we tend to be not-so-great at dealing with change; so, let’s find a better perspective; so we can do something about it; and maybe even make it fun.
Perspective shift: stop arguing with reality! I suspect a lot of those research reports are efforts to find different results – i.e., a different reality.
I don’t know anyone who can slip into an alternate timeline, so let’s just face the fact that we’re stuck with, well, reality.
Which means: what are we going to do about it?
We can’t slow the rate of change. Organizations have to change to stay relevant (meaning, profitable). Politics won’t stop being politics. People aren’t going to stop being people and creating conflict. Diseases aren’t going to stop infecting people.
And so on.
What can we do about it?
We’re already pretty good at change management – planning, timelines, resources, and so on.
Where we can get a lot better is on the people side of change, the skills that make up what I call change leadership.
That’s where most planned change initiatives go sideways.
That’s where unplanned, out-of-the-blue change knocks us over. It’s where all the change management skill in the world isn’t enough.
It’s where people – real people, as in, you and me and everyone around us – struggle and suffer.
We can do better.
Find a new perspective. Do something about it. And for the sake of everyone’s humanity – yes, even those you disagree with – try to make it fun.
