That was the conversation with my husband this morning: the laundry is never done. There’s always more, often right after you’ve just done a whole lotta loads.
Leadership, likewise, is never done.
Yeah, I know: kind of a cheesy analogy, right?
But I think there are a lot of people who believe that if they just take the right class, or read the right book, or follow the right mentor, or adopt the right model – and so on – then their leadership journey will be done, and they will have arrived. They’ll know how to manage any employee situation, complete any project, solve any leadership problem.
Nope.
Leadership is an endless gray area made up of never-ending nuance and subtle differences.
No situation is ever the same as any other. People are all, always, different – even from themselves, one day to the next.
Students in my programs often ask for certainty, but there really isn’t any.
Which is why I teach tools and concepts, rather than scripts or templates. You can learn to apply a concept and use a tool, but a script or template is rote and unimaginative.
Rote and unimaginative don’t work in leadership.
No. In leadership, there’s always something more to learn and there’s always a new situation to meet and manage.
And yes, there’s always more laundry!
If you’re interested in those tools – drop me a note here.
